It starts automatically when power fails, usually within seconds, and shuts down when utility power returns. No one has to be home, and nothing needs to be carried or fuelled during a storm.

This is the option for households where an extended outage is genuinely disruptive — medical equipment, a home business, someone who cannot manage without air conditioning in a Florida summer, or a well pump that means no water when the power is out.

Portable generator

A movable unit run on gasoline, connected either by extension cords or through a properly installed transfer switch and inlet. Lower cost, but it requires someone present to set it up, start it, and refuel it — during and after a storm.

For a standby generator:The electrical connection, the automatic transfer switch, the permit and the inspection. The gas connection is typically a separate trade.

Why a Transfer Switch Is Not Optional

A transfer switch disconnects your home from the utility supply before connecting the generator. This matters for two reasons.

Backfeeding can kill someone

Connecting a generator to your home without a transfer switch — for example through a dryer outlet, a practice sometimes called a suicide cord — can push power back into the utility lines. Utility crews working to restore power expect those lines to be dead. Backfeeding also risks a serious fire in your own home when utility power returns and meets the generator output.

There is no safe informal way to do this. A transfer switch is the mechanism that makes generator power safe, and it is the reason this is electrician work rather than a hardware store project.

Automatic transfer switch

Used with standby generators. It detects the outage, starts the generator, switches the load over, and reverses the process when utility power returns. Nobody has to do anything.

Manual transfer switch

Generator sizing is where most of the money is decided, and it is worth thinking about before you shop.

What drives the size

The rule is that a portable generator runs outdoors only, well away from the house — the Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends at least 20 feet — and away from windows, doors and vents. An open garage door is not sufficient ventilation. A carbon monoxide alarm inside the house is a sensible addition.

Standby units have manufacturer-specified clearances from windows, doors, vents and combustible material, and local requirements may apply as well. The electrician and installer determine the location — it is not simply a matter of where it looks tidy.

Fuel

Standby generators typically run on natural gas or propane. Natural gas means no refuelling. Propane requires a tank sized for the runtime you want. Portable generators usually run on gasoline, which must be stored safely and does not keep indefinitely.

A standby generator that has not been serviced is a large object in the garden that may or may not start.

Standby units run a periodic self-test — typically weekly — to keep the engine in condition. Beyond that they need oil changes, filter changes and battery checks on a schedule, because the battery is a common reason a standby generator fails to start when it is finally needed.

Portable generators need the fuel managed. Gasoline degrades, and a generator left with old fuel in it through an entire off-season frequently will not start when a storm arrives.
